Protest flags

Since the protest took place at the city offices, there were the normal batch of flags. In the case of Ridgecrest, that means the US and California state flags as well as a P.O.W. flag. The wind was uncooperative, and I never managed to get a shot of both the US and state flags blowing at the same time. The stage was set up right underneat the flags.

There's a statue of an eagle on one of the buildings, and I thought this shot of the P.O.W. flag flying with the eagle might be nice.

The official flags, of course, did not prevent folks from bringing their own.

The US flags weren't the only ones folks brought. On fellow had a very large "Don't Tread on Me" flag.

You have been warned!

This is the sort of thing that happens when you leave a camera lying around that has film in it.

And getting done in black and white? That's your punishment for wearing a red shirt.

Play ball!

Here's an anaglyph of a nephew playing kickball round about Halloween time.

Pirates!

I normally come down on the ninja side of the "pirates vs ninjas" issue, but I'm willing to make an exception for this sweetie:

I did this in black and white because her costume contained a lot of red. Similarly, the princess below had an outfit that was mostly pink.

The St. Bernard I did in black and white for consistency with the others, but was pleasantly surprised to discover that it makes his whiskers stand out; they are hard to see in color.

Scowly McScowlsalot

Here are some anaglyphs of one of my nieces. There are a couple of reasons that these are fuzzy and grainy. The 3D lens that I'm using doesn't allow a very large aperture (it only goes to f/11), so my camera has to take long exposures when I'm shooting indoors; I wasn't using a tripod, so I couldn't hold still enough for the pictures to be good. It's grainy because I tried a faster film to see if it helped the exposure situation; this was shot on ISO 800 film.

I don't think she likes me very much. She scowls at me a lot. After a while, she'll be OK until I pick up my camera, then she'll start scowling again.

Her brother isn't nearly so scowly.

Nonchalance

Here are a couple of pictures of folks standing around with their hands in their pockets. These are from the May '08 trip to Idaho Falls during a stop in Smithfield.

Tag?

I'm not nearly organized enough for Regina's tag game (4th folder? counting from where?), so I'll just respond with this picture of Regina moseying about aimlessly near a DeLorean.

DeLoreans have a special connection to Logan, since Thiokol sold their snow cat operation to DeLorean in 1978. It was run under the DMC brand name for a couple of years.

Mercedes

Since I grew up in Germany, I've always been partial to German cars. Mercedes in particular; I lived in Stuttgart, where Daimler Benz is headquartered. They have a very nice museum, or at least they did in 1975.

Here's a Mercedes from the '30s, taken at the Cache Valley Cruise-in. From the license plate, I suspect it's a replica. The inset is a shot of the dashboard.

And here's Regina wandering around a '30s Ford with her camera.

Touristy Stuff

Driving around Idaho Falls, I noticed a small park named "North Tourist Park". The park has the sort of things you might expect to find in a park for tourists, including:

  • Dumpsters. Several of them.
  • Picnic tables. Several of those.
  • Signs warning patrons that folks using the park for purposes other than picnicing are liable to be hassled by the fuzz.

Oh, yeah. Did I mention the large totem pole?

Graveside Prayer

One of the Rigby VFW guys offered the prayer at the graveside.

To be honest, I took this one for technical reasons; I thought the range of depths from the headstone in the foreground to the trees in the background would make a good 3D picture. The anaglyph, which you see here, worked out fine, but the lenticular didn't; if I align the picture on an interesting subject, the headstone breaks up and if I try to bring the headstone together, the trees break up. Lesson learned: lenticulars aren't very forgiving.

Guys with Guns

A detail from the Rigby VFW post provided a 21-gun salute at Duane's funeral. Here they are waiting their turn:

Three Guys and a Flag

Three soldiers showed up to the funeral to perform a flag ceremony. They patiently saluted while the casket was moved from the hearse to the grave.

They patiently waited during the graveside portion of the service.

Then they ceremoniously folded the flag.

My picture of the presentation of the flag to Duane's brother didn't turn out.

If April showers bring May flowers...

...what does April snow bring?

It snowed at the end of April when we were up in Rigby for Duane's funeral. By the time I took this picture, about half of it had already melted. By the time we got to the graveyard, it was a pretty nice day.

Pallbearers

Onna stick!

This is an anaglyph of  the F-4 on a post at the Hill AFB museum. I had to be pretty far back to get the whole plane in the frame, so the 3D's a bit subtle.

Bring Out Your Dead!

The Cerro Coso Community College's Students Intrigued by Technology Club ran a computer recycling booth at the Earth Day celebration. The idea is that folks could dump off their computers and we'd whisk them away.

Reinforcements Have Arrived

Regina spent an hour manning the Students Intrigued by Technology club's computer recycling booth. These folks were the previous shift.
